Playlist for August 18th!!

"What in the stars is that?", you're probably asking yourself. Well this happens to be part of the Angkor Wat in Angkor, Cambodia. Created in the 12th century (that's 1100s for those who get tripped up by century/years--don't worry, it happens) for the King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire, it served as a Hindu temple for the god Vishnu, who is known as the preserver or maintainer. This site, like that of the previously mentioned Santiago de Compestela, is listed as a World Heritage Site, as deemed by UNESCO.

A bit behind on the posting of playlists, but that's alright, because they're up now! Last week's show went well, and I'd like to thank those of you who listened in! I'm continuing the trend I started and am linking the songs to YouTube videos (if they're available...or not videos of terrible sound quality) so that you can listen to them again!

Playlist for August 11th!

Look to the left and you'll see the back facade of the cathedral at Santiago de Compestela, a world-reknowned site of pilgrimage since medieval times. Not Medieval Times, but the time period...you know how these things are.

It's situated in Galicia, which is an autonomous community in the upper northwest area of Spain. It's the pilgrimage route of St. James (Iago=James), and was widely traveled. In English, it's known as the Way of James, and in Spanish as the Camino de Santiago. It's an area rich in history since its creation after the downfall of the Constantinople and the Roman Empire, during the 5th century. Needless to say, a lot was going on. I mentioned other goings-on in a previous playlist post.

Hey there, everybody! Sorry for the tardiness of the playlist, but it's here! Hurray! I've linked the songs I could to their YouTube counterparts so that you can listen to them if you either missed out on the show or just want to hear the songs again! Enjoy!

Look over there! It's the Pyramids of Giza! Although the one in the center is the Pyramid of Giza, the main trio is part of the Giza necropolis. The Great Pyramid is oldest of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World and was constructed in roughly 2560 BC. The Giza complex is set in honor of Pharaoh Khufu (or Cheops in Greek), who reigned from around 2589 to 2566 B.C.

Just for fun, here's a map of the complex.

It's an architectural marvel and is a very interesting display for Egyptian geometry, as proven in the King's Chamber and the golden mean.

Hey, everyone! Wednesday's show went really well, and for those of you who listened in, I want to thank you! Hopefully, you guys enjoyed it! So there you go. :)

Same as always, if you have any suggestions or requests, you can reply to the posts or send me an e-mail to the address in the About Me section.
Have an awesome week!

Playlist for July 28th, 2010

If you'll look just to the left of this paragraph, you'll find William Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, which is in England. Right now, they're holding the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Poetry Festival (July 14th - August 1st), so if you're there before tomorrow, that's the place to go!

As you already know (or maybe you don't?), Shakespeare wrote a whole assortment of plays, sonnets, and the like throughout his life. Pieces such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello, and Twelfth Night, among a whole assortment of others, were written by him. You can find the Complete Works of him at this link right here. Also, you can take a little trip over to London and see the Globe Theater, where many of Shakespeare's plays have been brought to life. Even today, you can still see the shows being performed for modern audiences.

Hello to everybody! I've gotten this list up in much better time this week! Hurray! The show went well and, as always, I had fun playing music for those who were tuned in. We had some hits from all over the world and it was all a fun mix, so hopefully everybody enjoyed that. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm always looking for more music, so if anyone has any suggestions for songs or artists that they'd like to hear and that I can play on the radio, then go ahead and send me an email or reply to this post. :) Hopefully everybody's having a good weekend so far and has a good upcoming week!

p.s. If I can't figure out how to record shows, I'm just going to look for YouTube videos and link them to the titles. :)

'Til next time,
Gilliane

Look at left and you'll see an image of the Terracotta Army. Discovered near the mausoleum of the first Qin emperor, Emperor Qin Shi Huang, this monument of funerary art contains figures of over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses which share their resting place here in the mausoleum.

Each figure, which include images of soldiers, horses, is unique and representative of the standing army that the emperor had retained, given the fact that he ruled during the Warring States Period and was attempting to consolidate power. (Also, they connected parts of the Great Wall at this time.) At his death in 210 B.C., he had all of these figures created to join him. Many legends floated around that they were real soldiers who would protect him from all evil forces.

Hey everybody! Sorry this posting happens to be a week late, I've just been looking for more music and...just didn't find my way over here to BlogSpot! But I'm here now and this is the playlist. I apparently don't know how to record the show, so I'm going to have to ask somebody how to do that. Happy Bastille Day!

Today is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, of which you can find a painting at left. It's Prise de la Bastille by
Jean-Pierre Houël .

The Bastille was a fortress-prison in Paris, known for its storming on July 14th, 1789, is one event, along with the Tennis Court Oath, considered to be one of the first events to kick off the French Revolution. "At this point, the Bastille was nearly empty of prisoners, housing only seven inmates: four forgers, two "lunatics" and one "deviant" aristocrat, the comte de Solages (the Marquis de Sade had been transferred out ten days earlier)." But Marquis de Sade is a whole other story...

Ahoy there, everyone! This morning was the 4th installment of the show and it went well! Hurray! I managed to record the show...although I missed the first 20 minutes...because I was failing at how to record it. My bad. Playlist for July 7th, 2010!!

At left, you'll find an image of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, constructed between 76 and 80 AD under the emperor Vespasian, and the creation of an unknown architect, the name is considered derived from a colossal statue of the previous emperor, Nero, which stands close by.
An interesting aspect of the Colosseum, among other things, is in relation to the previous usage of the site. The prior emperor, Nero, had taken a large swath of land for his personal palatial lands, blackening the title and repute of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, of which he was the last.
Among many other architectural facets, Nero included a very large man-made lake which, after Nero's suicide
, had been filled it, creating the foundation for the Colosseum. As an apology for Nero's rule, Vespasian decided to recreate the area as a space for public usage.

Playlist for June 30, 2010

At left is an image of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. Designed by Isidore of Miletus, it served as a church in the city of Constantinople from 360 to 1453. When the city had been lost to the Ottoman Turks and became today's Istanbul, it was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II.
The architecture of the building was revolutionary, which its large domed arches, the largest the world had seen. Upon conversion, 4 minarets were added. Currently, the Hagia Sophia acts as a museum.

So, it was the second installation of Take A Walk this morning, and I want to thank everyone who listened in, I hope everyone enjoyed it! First Show! Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

At left, you'll find an image of La Sagrada Familia, a beautiful structure found in Barcelona, Spain. Construction on the building was started in 1882, and isn't expected to be completed until 2026.

Thank you to those who tuned in earlier this morning for the first program!
For any suggestions on what I should play in future shows, shoot me an email at gilliane@kuci.org and I'll totally see what I can do! I'm always looking for new World music because the genre is a new one to me. I'm expanding my horizons, so I'm open to suggestions!

I found a lot of tunes from Eurovision's pop music competition, so that's where a number of these tunes come from. For those I don't include the album, I'll put what country's entry in the competition the song was.
