Playlist for July 28th, 2010

If you'll look just to the left of this paragraph, you'll find William Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, which is in England. Right now, they're holding the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Poetry Festival (July 14th - August 1st), so if you're there before tomorrow, that's the place to go!

As you already know (or maybe you don't?), Shakespeare wrote a whole assortment of plays, sonnets, and the like throughout his life. Pieces such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello, and Twelfth Night, among a whole assortment of others, were written by him. You can find the Complete Works of him at this link right here. Also, you can take a little trip over to London and see the Globe Theater, where many of Shakespeare's plays have been brought to life. Even today, you can still see the shows being performed for modern audiences.

Hello to everybody! I've gotten this list up in much better time this week! Hurray! The show went well and, as always, I had fun playing music for those who were tuned in. We had some hits from all over the world and it was all a fun mix, so hopefully everybody enjoyed that. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm always looking for more music, so if anyone has any suggestions for songs or artists that they'd like to hear and that I can play on the radio, then go ahead and send me an email or reply to this post. :) Hopefully everybody's having a good weekend so far and has a good upcoming week!

p.s. If I can't figure out how to record shows, I'm just going to look for YouTube videos and link them to the titles. :)

'Til next time,
Gilliane

Playlist for July 21, 2010!

Look at left and you'll see an image of the Terracotta Army. Discovered near the mausoleum of the first Qin emperor, Emperor Qin Shi Huang, this monument of funerary art contains figures of over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses which share their resting place here in the mausoleum.

Each figure, which include images of soldiers, horses, is unique and representative of the standing army that the emperor had retained, given the fact that he ruled during the Warring States Period and was attempting to consolidate power. (Also, they connected parts of the Great Wall at this time.) At his death in 210 B.C., he had all of these figures created to join him. Many legends floated around that they were real soldiers who would protect him from all evil forces.

Hey everybody! Sorry this posting happens to be a week late, I've just been looking for more music and...just didn't find my way over here to BlogSpot! But I'm here now and this is the playlist. I apparently don't know how to record the show, so I'm going to have to ask somebody how to do that. The show went smoothly and I'm glad for those who listened in, hopefully you guys enjoyed the music! As always, I'm all ears for requests and suggestions!

Playlist for July 14th, 2010

Happy Bastille Day!

Today is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, of which you can find a painting at left. It's Prise de la Bastille by
Jean-Pierre Houël .

The Bastille was a fortress-prison in Paris, known for its storming on July 14th, 1789, is one event, along with the Tennis Court Oath, considered to be one of the first events to kick off the French Revolution. "At this point, the Bastille was nearly empty of prisoners, housing only seven inmates: four forgers, two "lunatics" and one "deviant" aristocrat, the comte de Solages (the Marquis de Sade had been transferred out ten days earlier)." But Marquis de Sade is a whole other story...

Like always, I'm open to any suggestions or requests for future shows' playlists, so don't hesitate to contact me and let me know! So, without further ado, here's this week's playlist:

Playlist for July 7th, 2010!!

At left, you'll find an image of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, constructed between 76 and 80 AD under the emperor Vespasian, and the creation of an unknown architect, the name is considered derived from a colossal statue of the previous emperor, Nero, which stands close by.
An interesting aspect of the Colosseum, among other things, is in relation to the previous usage of the site. The prior emperor, Nero, had taken a large swath of land for his personal palatial lands, blackening the title and repute of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, of which he was the last.
Among many other architectural facets, Nero included a very large man-made lake which, after Nero's suicide
, had been filled it, creating the foundation for the Colosseum. As an apology for Nero's rule, Vespasian decided to recreate the area as a space for public usage.
